Approximately 70% of AUC graduates get Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, or Pediatrics

Why are some people not eligible for residency?
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, i really don't know. Maybe they didn't complete a requirement or something?
ReplyDeleteHi Andrea,
ReplyDeletewhy do people not graduate on time? 1/3 of the class is pretty significant... similar to Ross. Do they make you repeat the entire yr is u do not pass a class like Ross? I am surprised that the median debt is also as high as it is.. I thought AUC would be cheaper than SGU. Love your blog, and I hope next semester goes well!
Hi Andrea. I'm really glad you keep your blog updated because it is a wonderful resource for prospective/accepted students. I was recently accepted for the coming September class, but due to some reasons, I am going to defer to January. Since you are also a January matriculant, I have a few questions (sorry for troubling you but I'm sooo stressed). I've read that January is the worst semester to start because you ideally can't make the residency match that the previous September class does, but then you have wayyy too much extra time until the next match. What match are you aiming for, and what are most of your fellow January peers aiming for? Furthermore, when do you officially finish everything (meaning rotations)? And once you're finished, what do you do with that extra time??? (sorry if im stressing you out too now, but i need to know this stuff to keep myself sane lol)
ReplyDeleteTo answer the first question from the anonymous poster, some people decide to take a semester off, while others do fail a class. When you fail a class at AUC, you do not need to take the entire semester over again, just the one class you failed. The few people who do fail usually end up failing one or two classes at the most and ultimately end up staying an extra semester on the island.
ReplyDelete62% of people graduating on time is actually a much better number than Ross where only 1/3 of the class actually graduates on time. And we have very low attrition here. Of the all the students who started in my class, only 4 have left (2 for personal reasons, 2 for academic)
For the last anonymous poster, I am looking to Match at the later date because frankly I don't mind taking some time off before starting the hell that is residency. You spend 4 hard years in med school and I wouldn't mind having a little bit of a breather before starting something that will take over all my time for the next 3 years. If you start in January 2012, you will have just missed the 2015 match and end up being in the 2016 Match.
ReplyDeleteHey, If you've been in a longterm relationship its probably a good time to have a wedding (I've been thinking about that one)!

Hi Andrea,
ReplyDeleteThe loan from AUC seems to be a almost a 100k more than US schools. Would most people be able to pay off such a huge amount?
If you graduate and get a residency you are definitely able to pay off the debts, it will just take a little while longer to do so. I'm probably not the best source for this but definitely call MEAS for more information.
ReplyDeleteHi Andrea! I did bad on my MCAT (22 P)...terrible I know! How well do you think MCAT correlates with USMLE step 1?
ReplyDeleteconsidering the highest score was a 260-something last year was done by a guy with a mcat score of 22.... id say there isnt much of a correlation, although some US schools will probably argue with me on that point.
ReplyDeleteHey Andrea,
ReplyDeleteI am moving to AUC in Janruary! Are there any craiglist like pages set up for students to buy used items? Maybe facebook groups? Anything will help thanks.
Nicole congratulation and you can find items students are selling on valuemd! go to the AUC forum and go to the "classifieds" section and it should all be there.
ReplyDeleteDear Andrea: The average debt is 100K more than what has been previously posted (when compared to other medical schools SGU, vs, Ross, vs. American Medical Schools). May you elaborate more on the extra expenses?
ReplyDeleteIt just adds up when you factor in the cost of living expenses. Rent on the island and in Manhattan ain't cheap over the course of 4 years. Groceries, transportation on top of that adds up.
DeleteIf you go by AAMC they tell you that the average med school debt is ~$150,000. While it would be great if that were true, most students do not find that to be the case. This is both for US and Caribbean schools. The best description I have seen of this can be found at:

Hi my name is David I have a interview in May. Is AUC really a good choice for med school?
ReplyDeleteit is. I've got earlier posts detailing why I chose AUC. You can search for it. I've enjoyed my experience thus far.
DeleteHi was wondering if AUC med school program is an overall good school?
