Back from my hiatus

Hi friends, I know it's been awhile.
I wish I could tell you that my lack of blogging has been due to a betterment of my study habits, but I'd be lying. Block I for this third semester has been my worst block in awhile.  I didn't start studying until 5 days before the exams so it wasn't really a shock to see how much I fell off from the type of grades I was getting last semester.

I certainly didn't plan for this. When I got back to the island for round three I still felt absolutely exhausted from all the went on at the end of semester two. I had a sort of mental lapse in my last month of school and it really spoiled all the excellent grades I had achieved prior. The result was a demoralizing   86.6% for my final overall grade of the semester. I was a lousy 0.4% points away from Dean's list. Not only that but I cost myself the opportunity to honor both MCB II and Immuno. I was fractional points away from that sexy "H" on my transcript.  Ah well... it's not a huge deal but I still feel sad I didn't achieve my goal I set for myself. This has all really taken a toll on my motivation to study, hence my less-than-stellar block 1 performance.

But I'm going to stop complaining now. I'll stop feeling sorry for myself. I need to just shut up and get back to work, because med school really is the worst place to stall. After this first week, I've stayed caught up in Med Micro and I've been spending the majority of today catching myself up on pathology. I'll spend tomorrow morning working on physio and spend that rest of the day watching football.

Oh football how I love and hate you.

Fantasy Update: I'm in four leagues and I'm currently 2-0, 1-1, 1-1, 1-1. Players that I have in the majority of my leagues- Larry Fitzgerald, Beanie Wells, Rob Gronkowski, Santonio Holmes, James Starks, Darren Sproles.

I'll update you all with my Block I exams when the final grades come out:

Pathology I-
Average: 83%
Me: 77%

Physiology II-
Average: 86%
Me: 79%

Med Micro-
Average: 80%
Me: 72%

  1. Hi Andrea,
First, Thanks for this wonderful blog, I guess I was lucky enough to stumble on it.
My gf has been accepted at AUC and will start in May of next year and I was wondering how her life would be and how her busy schedule would affect our relationship. How hard is it on you to maintain a long distance relationship? Good luck with your Block II exams

  2. Dear anonymous,
first semester can get a little hectic because of anatomy lab in the afternoons, but if you make time for each other every day for skype dates and gchat and you stick to it then it will make long distance the much more manageable.

At the end of the day though, it about the two of you. If you guys love each other, trust each other and set on staying together then it will happen. With the long distance relationships that fail here, there's always one person who really isn't as into it as the other person. But yea, as long as you guys are in it for the long haul it will work out. I chat/talk to my boyfriend everyday, and i have complete trust in him so long distance hasn't been too bad for me.

    Hope that helps!

  3. Thanks, that really helps. I don't think the trust is an issue. I was more concerned about whether she will have the time to chat/talk everyday. But it sounds like you aren't having an issue there :D. Thanks again =)... Although I'm not a Med student but I'm planning to keep on reading your blog posts... keep up the hard work.

  4. This. wins the internet.
I've spent the previous 6 hours reading 90% of your post starting from the very first one in May 2010. Of course the reason I was reading is I'm planning on attending Saba (cuz it's cheaper). I was feeling very uncertain and I couldn't even wrap my mind around life in a Caribbean medical school. I just want to say thank you. Your blog gave me a very real perspective and a sort of assurance.

Also: You better get on the Dean's list, not because you got soo close but because you want to be a good doctor.

  5. don't beat yourself up Andrea!!... i know i am also the type of student that have have to be at the top and get that A. I think we can lapse sometimes because of the overload we put upon ourselves. Look at this as your mental break... it's not too costly, meaning no failure. SO chin up and rock the next block!... all the best....
also i should add that i was accepted to AUC sept 2012 class and stumbled on this blog in my effort to find out as much as i can about AUC. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!...

    all the best ;)

  6. Hi Andrea,

Keep up the hard work! It will surely pay off =)

I have recently been accepted to AUC for the upcoming January semester. I have a few personal questions. Are there any eyebrow threading places around AUC? Moreover, for first semester, would you recommend me finding a place off campus? Thanks!

p.s. Your blog is awesome and an amazing guide for those just starting the journey =D

  7. There is an upscale sort of beauty salon/spa right by the casino in one of the apartment complexes. As for your first semester living situation ... definitely go with the dorms. You have enough stuff to worry about in your first few months here so I highly recommend them. And trying to find where to live thousands of miles away is just tough. You don't really quite know what you're getting until you arrive here and a lot of the time people are very disappointed.
